UPDATE 2: Two Way Syncing of Gcal and iPhone Calendars

Posted by yooper1019 on July 14, 2008

After some digging I found out how to sync gcal and my iphone. First set up an account at the VERY beta NuevaSync. You’ll then want to setup the calendar syncing under the calendar – change link and set it to google. Then go to setup and enter your google user name and password (if you have trust issues then i guess this isn’t for you). Leave the other services disabled.

Now you’ll need your iphone. Go to Settings – Mail, Contacts, Calendar – Add account – Microsoft exchange.

Enter you email address (required but not used since we’re only doing calendar, you could make one up). Enter you user name and password for NuevaSync NOT Google. Enter a description. Next the server will be www.nuevasync.com. Finally set SSL to ON.

That’s it! Now you can create events on your iphone and they will immediately show up in gcal (all iphone created events are created in your default gcal calendar. One small caveat is that while all of your google calendars will sync to the iphone there is no color coding and they will all appear to be from the same cal. Notifications work both ways also which is AWESOME because now I can turn off all my SMS Notifications.

Enjoy!

UPDATE: Just received an email from Nuevasync stating that my Google account was locked and I had to go do an unlock CAPTCHA. Here’s to hoping they don’t steal my life!

UPDATE 2: I added push contacts in Nuevasync (easy peasy to do), but I lost all the contacts on my iPhone and almost fainted. Within minutes though Nuevasync emailed me saying I needed to do another captcha unlock. Looks like they will do this for all users until they sort out the API issues. Bonus: Gmail using contacts can have profile pics updated via push. Nice!

Hey. I just had the same experience as you, and “unlocked” my google account via captcha. I’m crossing my fingers as well, but the service is working very, very well. Why can’t google do this itself?

I’ve been trying to get this working for a few days and I still haven’t had anything show up on my calendar. It seems to be ok with the Exchange settings, just no calendars come across.

    @ Skinnerbox:
I think Google locked our accounts because they thought Nuevasync was trying to phish our data. Most times sites accessing that level of info needs “permission granted” by the site like when you authorize facebook to access your flickr account. Being “very” Beta I don’t think Nuevasync has implemented that yet.

    @ Psoplayer:
Mine stopped updating too but after I “unlocked” my google account everything was fine again! Just tested it a day later and works like a charm!

Here’s the link I used to unlock it https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

Cheers for this, I’ve also got a writeup at http://beaugiles.net/blog/2008/07/a-free-mobileme-alternative-part2/ on how you can sync google calendar & contacts with your Mac :-)

Works great. Didn’t at first. I just disabled it. Did the captcha unlock AGAIN and enabled it.

I was able to setup the initial sync (from Google Calendar to Iphone Calendar) without any issues. However, I can’t seem to sync subsequent inputs made on Google Calendar to the iPhone or inputs made on my iPhone back to Google Calendar.

I saw this thread and just submitted to captcha unlock. Still, no subsequent sync took place. Is it just not working or do I have to wait for a day or longer?

Can I just say thanks for a great tutorial. I have done this and it works brilliantly. Saved me the cost of MobileMe
